Xander was one of Rivergate’s leading sculptors of marble, and thus one of the most sought after in feltingara. His passions poured into the stone and the Regals poured in, until the night his wife passed away. As Xander’s passion for life slipped away he began the slow process of forgetting his life. As he withdrew into the bottles, his son Xyphus was left to fend for himself.
Xyphus was always intrigued by the magic of Professor Raibeart. When his father began drinking, Xyphus came along to help his father get home, and to listen to the professor’s stories. Professor Raibeart noticed a talent in young Xyphus and began teaching him the cantrips that he used in his story telling.
Eventually, Xyphus became old enough for the choosing. He asked Professor Raibeart to take him on as an apprentice before each naming day for a couple of years, but the professor was not interested in an apprentice. One naming day, Raibeart told Xyphus, “Ask to be my apprentice no longer my young friend. I do not have the time to train you correctly. Take this letter and, if you can make it to the University in Kailenhal, give it to the Headmaster.”
During one of his less wine soaked days Xyphus told his father about the letter and his father offered to give his son most of his remaining savings for use in entering the Collage of Arcana at the University of Shakala in the Duchy of Feltingara capital, Kailenhal.
Xyphus studied for a few years at the university learning all of the basics of Arcana then focusing on the combative nature of the arts. He made a few friends and acquaintances from his classes. His knowledge of old artifacts and the nature some of the trinkets that he kept in his room kept the various historian wannabes hanging around. Most memorable was the female elf, Erowin, that visited his room after hearing of a specific piece he had. He showed her the elven jade hair comb and after many back and forth questions and answers learned that she was a fellow student, Eladrin not elven, and that the comb belonged to a famous Eladrin war wizard of the orc wars. She learned where he was from and that professor Raibeart had many other old elven things in his possession.
His education progressed well and he was looking at a possible future as a professor of history when he learned of his father’s death. He left his studies to return home, bury his father, and put his and his father’s affairs in order. While dealing with his father’s debts, Erowin arrived in Rivergate with a family friend, Phlarr, to meet with Professor Raibeart.
